When the air is cold and the Sun is rising or <a href=\"http:\/\/apod.nasa.gov\/apod\/ap980526.html\">setting<\/a>, falling ice <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Crystal\">crystals<\/a> can reflect sunlight and create an <a href=\"http:\/\/apod.nasa.gov\/apod\/ap021110.html\">unusual<\/a> column of light. Ice sometimes forms flat, six-sided <a href=\"http:\/\/www.its.caltech.edu\/~atomic\/snowcrystals\/primer\/primer.htm\">shaped crystals<\/a> as it falls from high-level <a href=\"http:\/\/eo.ucar.edu\/webweather\/cloud3.html\">clouds<\/a>. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.physicsclassroom.com\/mmedia\/newtlaws\/efar.cfm\">Air resistance<\/a> causes these crystals to lie nearly flat much of the time as they flutter to the ground. Sunlight reflects off crystals that are <a href=\"http:\/\/apod.nasa.gov\/apod\/ap020902.html\">properly aligned<\/a>, creating the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sun_pillar\">sun-pillar<\/a> effect.
