{"id":1710,"date":"2016-01-29T08:03:00","date_gmt":"2016-01-29T15:03:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.ahwilderness.com\/?p=1710"},"modified":"2016-01-28T20:04:05","modified_gmt":"2016-01-29T03:04:05","slug":"public-access-to-nms-sabinoso-wilderness-almost-there-abqjournal-online","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.ahwilderness.com\/?p=1710","title":{"rendered":"Public access to NM&rsquo;s Sabinoso Wilderness almost there &ndash; ABQJournal Online"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.abqjournal.com\/713850\/news\/public-access-to-nm-sabinoso-wilderness-almost-there.html\">Public access to NM\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Sabinoso Wilderness almost there \u00e2\u20ac\u201c ABQJournal Online<\/a> <\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>SANTA FE, N.M. \u00e2\u20ac\u201d Public access to New Mexico\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s 16,000-acre Sabinoso Wilderness \u00e2\u20ac\u201c entirely \u00e2\u20ac\u0153landlocked\u00e2\u20ac\u009d by private land \u00e2\u20ac\u201c moved closer to reality today on news the nonprofit Wilderness Land Trust bought adjacent property that could soon allow hikers, hunters, backpackers and others access to it. <\/p>\n<p>The purchase of the 4,176-acre Rimrock Rose property, made possible by a $3.1 million contribution from the Wyss Foundation, could allow public access to the Sabinoso by summer. <\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153We\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve been working on creating access to the Sabinoso Wilderness since it was proposed for designation,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d said Reid Haughey, president of The Wilderness Land Trust. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153To the best of our knowledge, Sabinoso is the only wilderness area among the 762 wilderness areas within the National Wilderness Preservation System that does not have public access.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d <\/p>\n<p>The Sabinoso Wilderness, created by Congress in 2009, is a rugged back-country area east of Las Vegas, N.M., that is home to mule deer, bobcats, gray foxes and a wide range of plant and animal species that are home to the high plains.
