{"id":402,"date":"2007-03-20T08:30:49","date_gmt":"2007-03-20T14:30:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mjhinton.com\/wild\/?p=402"},"modified":"2007-03-20T08:30:49","modified_gmt":"2007-03-20T14:30:49","slug":"federal-wolf-killer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.ahwilderness.com\/?p=402","title":{"rendered":"Federal Wolf Killer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.abqjournal.com\/news\/state\/547422nm03-17-07.htm\">ABQjournal: Federal Agent Kills Endangered Wolf<\/a><br \/>\nJournal Staff Report<\/p>\n<p>    LAS CRUCES\u00e2\u20ac\u201d A federal predator control agent riding in a small plane Friday fatally shot a Mexican gray wolf from the Saddle Pack on the edge of the Gila Wilderness.<\/p>\n<p>    <strong class=\"highlight\">The shooting, carried out pursuant to a Feb. 24 permanent removal order, marked the second time this year federal agents have killed an endangered Mexican gray wolf, and the seventh authorized kill since January 2006.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>    About 58 Mexican wolves are left in the recovery area of southeast Arizona and southwest New Mexico, where the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service began reintroducing the species in 1998.<\/p>\n<p>    The wolf killed Friday\u00e2\u20ac\u201d a two-year-old male designated M1007\u00e2\u20ac\u201d was targeted because of a management protocol that calls for removal of wolves that have preyed on livestock in three cases in one year.<\/p>\n<p>    Albuquerque-based John Morgart, the wolf recovery program coordinator, said <strong class=\"highlight\">wildlife officials hope killing the wolf will <em>discourage<\/em> other members of the pack from preying on livestock<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><em class=\"highlight\">[mjh: are these officials really stupid enough to believe the wolves will see the connection?]<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>ABQjournal: Federal Agent Kills Endangered Wolf Journal Staff Report LAS CRUCES\u00e2\u20ac\u201d A federal predator control agent riding in a small plane Friday fatally shot a Mexican gray wolf from the Saddle Pack on the edge of the Gila Wilderness.
