{"id":439,"date":"2007-08-02T13:48:03","date_gmt":"2007-08-02T19:48:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mjhinton.com\/wild\/?p=439"},"modified":"2007-08-02T13:48:03","modified_gmt":"2007-08-02T19:48:03","slug":"the-pride-of-catron-county","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.ahwilderness.com\/?p=439","title":{"rendered":"The Pride of Catron County"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.freenewmexican.com\/news\/65651.html\" title=\"link to original article\">Catron County: Groups aim to overturn wolf law<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The federal government has been reintroducing the wolves to the Blue Range Wolf Recovery Area \u00e2\u20ac\u201d 4.4 million acres of the Gila and Apache Sitgreaves national forests in southwestern New Mexico and southeastern Arizona plus Arizona\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s 1.6 million-acre White Mountain Apache reservation, interspersed with private land and towns.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The program began March 29, 1998, when the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service released 11 wolves that were bred in captivity.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The recovery area had 59 wolves as of January 2007<\/strong> <em class=\"mine\">[mjh: That&#8217;s +48 wolves in 9 years.]<\/em>, and that number has fluctuated with wolf deaths and removals and the births of pups, said Elizabeth Slown, a Fish and Wildlife Service spokeswoman in Albuquerque.<\/p>\n<p>The agency conducts one count of wild wolves annually.<\/p>\n<p><strong>By the end of June, only 26 wolves could be located<\/strong> <em class=\"mine\">[mjh: Is that -33 wolves in 6 months?
