{"id":523,"date":"2008-06-17T17:43:03","date_gmt":"2008-06-17T23:43:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mjhinton.com\/wild\/?p=523"},"modified":"2008-06-17T17:43:03","modified_gmt":"2008-06-17T23:43:03","slug":"results-of-poll-on-feelings-about-wolves-in-nm-az-las-cruces-sun-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.ahwilderness.com\/?p=523","title":{"rendered":"Results of poll on feelings about wolves in NM, AZ &#8211; Las Cruces Sun-News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"mine\">peace, <span class=\"sig\">mjh<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lcsun-news.com\/ci_9602536\">Results of poll on feelings about wolves in NM, AZ &#8211; Las Cruces Sun-News<\/a> <\/p>\n<p>By The Associated Press<\/p>\n<p>Article Launched: 06\/16\/2008 12:03:33 PM MDT<\/p>\n<p>ALBUQUERQUE\u00e2\u20ac\u201dA look at results from a poll of 1,000 residents of New Mexico and Arizona, half in each state, about the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service&#8217;s 10-year-old program to reintroduce the Mexican gray wolf on public lands in the two states. <\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u201d<strong>Sixty-seven percent of Arizonans and 57 percent of New Mexicans favor giving wolves greater protection under the Endangered Species Act<\/strong>; 14 percent of Arizonans and 25 percent of New Mexicans oppose the idea. <\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u201dFifty-one percent of Arizonans and 49 percent of New Mexicans believe livestock grazing is good for the environment; 16 percent of Arizonans and 19 percent of New Mexicans disagree. <\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u201d<strong>Sixty-two percent of Arizonans and 53 percent of New Mexicans support letting wolves migrate to suitable habitat in the states<\/strong>; 17 percent of Arizonans and 24 percent of New Mexicans oppose migration. <\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u201d<strong>Sixty percent of Arizonans rate their overall feelings about wolves as positive; 13 percent are negative and 22 percent are neutral. In New Mexico, 48 percent have overall positive feelings, 19 percent are negative and 26 percent are neutral.<\/strong> <\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u201dSixty percent of Arizonans and half of the New Mexicans surveyed want ranchers to be required to remove or render inedible the carcasses of cattle that die of non-wolf causes\u00e2\u20ac\u201dsomething environmental groups have pushed for. <\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u201dFifty-one percent of Arizonans and 48 percent of New Mexicans support reimbursing ranchers who volunteer to give up their grazing leases. <\/p>\n<p>A portion of the poll calling for respondants to state the first thing that came to mind when thinking about wolves found: <\/p>\n<p>Arizona: <\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u201d21 percent: beautiful animal <\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u201d14 percent endangered species <\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u201d12 percent wild <\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u201d6 percent dangerous <\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u201d4 percent kill livestock <\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u201d13 percent don&#8217;t know or won&#8217;t say <\/p>\n<p>New Mexico: <\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u201d9 percent endangered species <\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u201d7 percent beautiful animal <\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u201d6 percent wild <\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u201d4 percent kill livestock <\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u201d3 percent dangerous <\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u201d13 percent don&#8217;t know or won&#8217;t say <\/p>\n<p>\u00e2\u20ac\u201d\u00e2\u20ac\u201d\u00e2\u20ac\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Information from poll done in April and May by Research &amp; Polling Inc. of Albuquerque.
